Background: The Visioners for Abortion Freedom is a collective of truth seekers and dream makers from reproductive justice leaders across the U.S. envisioning a WHOLE future that holds us all. The project is designed and facilitated by Alicia M. Walters, who is the creative director and lead content creator for WHOLE. WHOLE is an audiovisual offering that births a new vision for abortion freedom. Centering Blackness and Black-wombed people, this piece will inspire folks to imagine this narrative album on their own and to include themselves within this abortion freedom movement.
The Request: The Visioners for Abortion Freedom needed a digital platform to house the WHOLE project.
RESEARCH & DISCOVERY | KICKOFF MEETING WITH STAKEHOLDERS
The Intent & Vision:
Inspirational - In that this offering causes people to want to act.
Aspirational - In that it points audiences towards a future goal.
Accessible - In that people of all ages and abilities feel included and welcome to engage.
Actionable - In that it directs people towards concrete next steps.
Thoughts that got me thinking:
Each section within the WHOLE project needs to stand out and have its own video and audio piece visible attached
How do we make this experience accessible outside of the audio and visual component?
How do we make sure the user flow is simple and the design is not too overbearing with all the components that are involved?
STRATEGY & IDEATION | PROJECT BRIEF DEVELOPMENT
My Underlying Approach:
Use a small number of links in the main navigation for simplicity
Add a sign up input field at the footer of every page to help grow their community
Adapt a one-page layout scroll to display the audio and visual album for linear focused storyline
Add a page that types out the text of each section with a downloadable PDF option for extended accessibility
Our Design Process:
Mood board - 1 round of design
Sitemap - 1 round of design
Low fidelity wireframes - 2 rounds of design
High fidelity wireframes - 2 rounds of design
RESULTS & REFLECTIONS
Our Outcome: Alicia M. Walters, creative director and author WHOLE: A Vision for Abortion Freedom, was featured in numerous outlets including The New York Times, The Guardian, Ebony and TIME.
Note: Design changes have been made since this launched in 2022 but the overall design direction is still present on Whole's website.
My Thoughts: This project had so many moving parts which made communication, adaptability, and collaboration skills a must have to successfully complete it. Every part of this process played a big role in tapping into that journey of abortion freedom and being the keeper of your body. I was a part of cross-functional team that met frequently to make sure everything was aligned from start to finish. Working with audio production team and video production team opened my eyes and ears to details I wouldn't have noticed. There are so many things that go into digital storytelling and how you can tap into different features to create an immersive experience. However, make sure you plan ahead because creating something so in-depth with so many collaborators can take months. I enjoyed working with The Visioners for Abortion Freedom and I admire the love and detail they put into developing the WHOLE project.
